Good writing is hard to come by. Even more precious is enlightened writing that interests, informs, and challenges. Writing is my passion. To me, there's nothing as satisfying as researching an issue, interviewing an expert, composing engaging and thoughtful prose, and publishing a well-written product that stirs the mind.
In particular, I love writing about issues that impact the way we live and how we relate to each other. Like most writers, I write about what interests me and what I know: civil liberties, women, the LGBT community, public policy and electoral politics. My expertise derives from my professional background as a staffer on Capitol Hill and a legislative aide for organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington and the Northwest Women’s Law Center. Then there’s my overall news fixation and obsession with politics, which I’ve battled most of my life!
I am also a writer for hire on other issues and for bigger corporations, because I love to learn and I understand how coherent, intelligent communication can impact the bottom line. I have developed and managed content in hardcopy and electronic formats for Microsoft Corporation and Group Health Cooperative (health care organization in Washington), predominantly on proprietary, legal, and regulatory issues within the software and health care industries.
Through classes, seminars, and work projects, I am developing expertise in the ever-important field of Web usability—particularly, writing and editing for the Web to ensure users can quickly find, understand, and absorb what’s before their eyes before they click away.
Whatever I write about, in whatever format, I owe it to my readers to provide clear, accurate, and engaging prose. I want the reader to understand, to think, and to question. That, to me, is what good writing is all about.
